Scripture: Colossians 1:9-12

“And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10 so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy; 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.”

I have preached on this scripture the last few months. This scripture for me sums up what my goals are each and every day. That is to be filled with spiritual wisdom and knowledge so that I can walk in a manner that pleases the Lord so that I can produce good fruit, and grow in my knowledge of Him. It’s not about what other people think, what they may say about us. It’s about what pleases God. Does my life please the Lord? Am I producing good fruit in the things that I do, and am I growing in my knowledge of God? Am I growing closer to Him? How do I get to this point?

We must first have knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding. We must spend time reading and learning His Word. We must spend time in prayer and praying in the spirit. Having a full connection with the Lord that, through Christ Jesus, has been made available to us. How do you get to know God? How do you get to know anyone? By spending time with Him. The Amplified version of verse 9 says so that we may be, “filled with the full (deep and clear) knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom [in comprehensive insight into the ways and purposes of God] and in understanding and discernment of spiritual things—”

God wants us to know His ways. He wants to be fruitful in our lives. Remember what God said in Joshua 1:8, “This Book of the Law shall not depart out of your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, that you may observe and do according to all that is written in it. For then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall deal wisely and have good success.” The key to being fruitful, prosperous, and successful is obeying His word. Thinking on His word day and night. Speaking it and doing it. Living out His Word. That’s when we’ll see good fruit in every great work like it says in verse 10 of Colossians 1. We when study the word and live out the word, we grow in the knowledge of who God is and become more like Him and walk in His ways.

In verses 12 and 13 of Colossians 1 in the Amplified version it says, “Giving thanks to the Father, Who has qualified and made us fit to share the portion which is the inheritance of the saints (God’s holy people) in the Light. [The Father] has delivered and drawn us to Himself out of the control and the dominion of darkness and has transferred us into the kingdom of the Son of His love.” This week let us continue to draw closer to God. Spend time in His word and in His presence. Stay true to what He says. Live a life that’s pleasing to Him. You will see much fruit in every area of your life.

Prayer: Father we thank you for this blessed day and we thank you for this wonderful week we will have. We pray that as Your word says, we draw closer to You and You will draw closer to us. We want to grow in our knowledge of You so that we can be closer to You each and every day. We pray that You lead us and guide us to live a life pleasing to You and that we will bear fruit in every good work. We thank you again, and we give You all of the glory, the honor, and the praise. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
